There has been a massive amount of discussion recently about the release of MT and Translation technologies (much of which has been by Google and Microsoft) – how does the Google Toolkit impact the professional world for instance seems to have gotten hundreds if not thousands of posts this week. Specifically is the google translator tool the omen of istock type doom for the professional translator market?
The success of iStock Photo model was that tens of thousands of community members found a method and medium to replace thousands of stock photography professionals, revolutionizing an industry almost over night. Tools were a massive part of this revolution – digital cameras, specifically high quality DSLRs empowered users to create community comparative quality (what people would pay for) at a fraction of the cost. Why spend $600 when you could almost the same thing for $12 from the ’semi professional’ community?
Its an interesting question and so for today at least I will leave you with that, while I work up an opinion of my own for a later post….
